“The mission of the Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus in America, SPAAMFAA, is to serve as a place where people having an interest in antique fire apparatus can gather to share that interest and to further the preservation of antique fire apparatus.”
Founded in 1958, SPAAMFAA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit membership organization. Today, with more than 3,000 members and 50 chapters, SPAAMFAA provides to those with interest in or ownership of antique fire apparatus, a variety of publications, resources, comradery, national participatory events called musters, and related activities.
SPAAMFAA’s Archives Program was established in 1985 and was physically located in Hershey, PA at the Antique Automobile Club of America. Near the end of 2015, the Archives were moved to Kansas City, MO sharing space with another 501(c)(3), the Antique Truck Historical Society.
The SPAAMFAA Archives Committee seeks an energetic, self-starting, organized, and focused professional with a willingness to learn and adapt, to serve as the part-time Archivist at the national library in Kansas City, MO. The Archives share space with another 501(c)(3) library located in a one-story business park; and, the Archivist is assigned a private office associated with the collection
The Archivist is the primary person in charge of and responsible for the security, management, maintenance and expansion of both the physical collection and intellectual property owned by SPAAMFAA. Areas of required interest are in history and firefighting vehicles, or a willingness to learn.
The Archives collection consists of electronic and two dimensional primary source historical documents such as drawings, hundreds of blueprints, thousands of photographs, books, manufacturer’s manuals and literature, along with a variety of ephemera.
As determined by the Archives Committee, the goals and objectives are to electronically inventory, catalogue and scan the collection utilizing the newly purchased software, PastPerfect, and other library, inventory, and on-line programs. The Archivist will have full support from the Committee to educate and answer questions about fire vehicles, history, identification and details.
The ultimate goal is to make the collection accessible on-line for SPAAMFAA members.
The Archivist will work to fulfill the stated goals and will be responsible for responding to requests for research, provide copies of materials, and, welcome guests to the Kansas City facility by giving access and support. Typical business communications are to be utilized by email, phone, ground and air transport, along with shipping and receiving duties.
The Archivist will report to and work closely with the offsite Chairman of the Archives Committee; will have responsibility to recruit, train and manage volunteers and interns; and, will periodically assist the Archives Committee in fundraising efforts, including the application of grants to support the goals and objectives of the SPAAMFAA Archives. The Archivist will participate in a status review of performance at three months and six months, within the first year.
Bachelor’s degree in any of the following: Library Science, History, Technology, Museum Studies or related field is required.
A candidate having experience in any of the following environments is preferred:
• In a museum environment; cataloging, collections preservation techniques, performing a physical inventory; and, experience with the digitization of a collection.
• In a library or archive environment; cataloging, creating a detailed description of a variety of material objects; arranging the physical inventory; and, experience with the digitization of a collection.
Applicants holding a certificate in Library Science or Archives or Museum Collections Management are highly sought. The Committee will give preference to those with knowledge and skills in: current trends, tools, and protocols in digital archiving and preservation; professional experience processing digital records as part of a digital archives program; working knowledge of archival descriptive standards; intellectual property rights, and, digital archival standards.
Knowledge and experience using PastPerfect museum software and/or a library database is a plus, although, a Candidate without PastPerfect experience must be willing to learn. Other commonly accepted software requirements are Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and publishing software. In addition, a requirement is the accuracy of spelling, good grasp of English language/vocabulary, legible handwriting and attention to detail.
This position requires an individual to be able to lift up to 35 pounds and work on a ladder. Must be 21 years of age or older, possess a valid driver’s license and pass a background check.
